Tattoo aftercare
Tattoo aftercare
You’ve got the tattoo. Now let’s make sure it heals beautifully.
Aftercare doesn’t need to be complicated, but it does matter. A little bit of care now will help your tattoo settle properly, keep those fine lines looking crisp, and make sure it still looks just as good down the line.
We’ll talk you through everything at your appointment, so you won’t be left guessing. But if you want a refresher, or you’re the type who likes to double check (same), here’s exactly what to do.
How do I look after my tattoo?
Keep it clean, keep it lightly moisturised, and leave it alone as much as possible.
Wash gently with lukewarm water and a fragrance-free cleanser, pat dry (no rubbing), and apply a thin layer of balm. Repeat a couple of times a day. Think low maintenance, not overdoing it.
How long does a tattoo take to heal?
Most tattoos take around 2–4 weeks to heal on the surface, but the skin underneath can take a little longer.
It might look healed quite quickly, but it’s still settling. So even if it feels fine, keep up your aftercare. Future you will be glad you did.
Can I shower after getting a tattoo?
Yes, absolutely.
Just keep it gentle. No long, steamy showers, and avoid letting water hit it directly for too long. And no soaking. So baths, pools and hot tubs are off the table for a couple of weeks.
When can I exercise again?
Give it about 72 hours before anything intense.
Light movement is fine, but anything sweaty, high-friction or likely to irritate the area is best avoided for a few days. Your tattoo will thank you.
Why is my tattoo itchy?
Because it’s healing. Annoying, but completely normal.
The key thing is don’t scratch it. We know. But really. Keep it moisturised instead, which will help calm the itch without interfering with the healing.
Is it normal for my tattoo to peel or flake?
Yes, very normal.
It can look a bit like dry skin or light peeling. Let it do its thing. Don’t pick, don’t peel, don’t try to “help” it along. That’s how you lose ink.
Can I go in the sun after getting a tattoo?
Not while it’s healing.
Avoid direct sun for at least four weeks, and once it’s healed, always use SPF. Fine line tattoos especially need a bit of protection to keep them looking soft and defined.
Can I wear tight clothing over my tattoo?
Try to avoid it while it’s healing.
Anything that rubs or sticks to the area can irritate it. Loose, breathable clothing is your best option for the first couple of weeks.
Will my tattoo fade?
All tattoos soften slightly as they heal, especially fine line work. That’s part of the process.
With good aftercare and a little ongoing care (hello SPF), it’ll settle beautifully. And if needed, we offer a complimentary touch-up to perfect it.
